ERA Test (Endometrial Receptivity Analysis)

Understanding the Implantation Window in IVF

The ERA Test is an advanced diagnostic tool used in IVF treatment to determine whether the uterine lining is ready for embryo implantation. It helps identify the optimal timing for embryo transfer and can improve IVF success rates for some patients.

What is the ERA Test?

ERA stands for Endometrial Receptivity Analysis. It is a specialized test used to evaluate whether the uterine lining (endometrium) is receptive to embryo implantation during IVF treatment. Successful pregnancy requires precise synchronization between embryo development and endometrial readiness. If the embryo is transferred outside the optimal implantation window, implantation may fail even if the embryo is healthy. The ERA test helps identify this window more accurately.

IVF Embryo development stages

The implantation window is a short period during which the uterine lining becomes receptive to the embryo. For most women, this occurs about five days after progesterone exposure during IVF treatment. However, some women may have a shifted implantation window.

  • Early implantation window
  • Delayed implantation window
  • Normal implantation timing

How the ERA Test Works

Step 1

Hormone therapy prepares the uterine lining similar to an IVF cycle.

Step 2

A small endometrial biopsy sample is taken from the uterus.

Step 3

Genetic analysis evaluates gene expression to determine receptivity.

Who Should Consider the ERA Test?

  • Repeated IVF failure
  • Repeated implantation failure
  • Multiple embryo transfer failures
  • Unexplained IVF failure
  • Previous successful embryos that failed to implant

Limitations of ERA Testing

Limitations of ERA Testing

Although ERA testing may help identify implantation timing issues, it does not guarantee pregnancy. Many other factors influence IVF success, including embryo quality, uterine conditions, genetics, and laboratory factors.
